History Essay #2- Lincoln or Washington?

Lincoln or Washington? Now this question is extremely hard to answer because these are both two of my favorite presidents. Now Lincoln has done so much for us, he had a huge part in getting rid of slavery. But Washington had a huge part in our freedom from Britain, and he was the first president! But if i had to chose, I think I would chose Abraham Lincoln.

I know what you might be thinking... and yes I know Washington was the first president (I said it up there). But the things Lincoln did for people that were struggling so much, tops that.Abraham Lincoln became president in 1861, that's also when the Civil War started. So you can imagine that this is a big job to handle. Lincoln warned the South in his Inaugural Address: "In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The government will not assail you.... You have no oath registered in Heaven to destroy the government, while I shall have the most solemn one to preserve, protect and defend it."

In 1863 Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation states, "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free." You can imagine that this came as a shock to everyone because the war wasn't even over yet and he was already saying that slaves were free. But Abraham would stop at nothing to get rid of slavery for good.

As President, Lincoln built the Republican Party into a strong national organization. Further, he rallied most of the northern Democrats to the Union cause. On January 1, 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy. Now don't get me wrong Washington was great too, but Lincoln was just a little better. With getting rid of slaves and building up the Republican Party and issuing the Emancipation Proclamation.

But Washington has done a lot for the country too, he was the first president. George Washington was a leader of the Continental Army in the American Revolution, and was the first to become U.S. president. April 19,1775 the Revolutionary War started, and along that came chaos. Many people were frightened by the British because they controlled us. They would come to our villages or towns and watch what we were doing making sure we did nothing rebellious. That was until George came around. He fought in the battle and beat Britain. Getting our freedom from them.

Lincoln over Washington, even though they both are kind od all around equal to me in the amount they did for our country. Lincoln just did so much more, releasing people from their misery of being a slave. Released them from all the whippings and the beatings, and breaking up families. I definitely think Lincoln is the better option in this question.
