The Louisiana Purchase 

Key Terms:

Louisiana Purchase: On October 20,1803, the senate approved the agreement of the Louisiana Purchase, whuch roughly doubled the size of the United States. 

Sacagawea: (1786? - 1812) Shoshone women who, along with her French fur- trapper husband , accompanied and aided Lewis and Clark Expedition. 

Lewis and Clark Expedition: In May 1804 the Lewis and Clark Expedition began its long journey to explore the Louisiana Purchase.

Zebulon Pike: (1779 - 1813) Army officer sent on a mission to explore the West, he was ordered to find the headwaters of the Red River. He attemepted to climb what is now known as Pikes Peak in Colorado. 

The Louisiana Purchase cost $15 million and cost less than three cents per acre.  Because of the Louisiana Purchase, the United States purchased approximately 828 million square miles of France, and  aloso being doubled at that point. The Louisiana Purchase also included the states Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Minnesota, and West of the Mississippi River. Spain signed a secret treaty with France to return the Louisiana Territory to France in 1801.
